April 2009
It’s officially spring! One local producer reports their earliest start to the season in 40 years of making maple syrup. Now, if we can just hold on until things have time to grow!
Provided the weather co-operates, wild treasures like leeks and fiddleheads will soon begin appearing, along with the first asparagus. Greens and mushrooms grown with some protection will also be among the earliest spring foods coming to markets, enhanced by beautiful local daffodils and tulips for the table.
Joining our year-round farmers’ markets (the early-birds of spring), Toronto will have a new market beginning on April 23, The Appletree Market, Thursdays 3-7 pm at 200 Eglinton West, just a short distance from Yonge Street.
We’re updating all the markets’ season dates and –very soon– our map in preparation for the 2009 outdoor season, beginning in May.
Join us in supporting local agriculture and enjoying the great flavours of a market near you!
