August 2008

August means big round onions to add to everything you cook, small sweet tightly packed cabbages, crunchy carrots, full sized beets, and beans too. The first potatoes have been dug, and the tiny baby ones are almost all grown into heartier new potatoes. Some heirloom apples and lots of tomatoes are coming in, and cauliflower and broccoli are plentiful.

Expect to find a riot of colour and tastes redolent of big brass bands this month. This is the time to wake up early to give yourself some extra time to enjoy the long days, put the coffee on and slice a fresh tomato onto toast; eat some sunshine with your breakfast. And lunch. And dinner….
